Teen Bedroom Makeover Takes Bulldog Chic Fashion Forward

The muses in my household are two english bulldogs, Hope and Bosco—equal parts adorable and ugly depending on who you ask. Although my bulldogs’ aesthetic appeal is debatable, we think our bulldogs are the perfect design inspiration for my 13-year-old daughter’s bedroom makeover.

Bulldog Chic bedroom makeover for my 13-year-old daughter features a bulldog mural honoring her deceased dog and portraits she took of her two current bulldogs, Hope & Bosco

My daughter Alexis dotes on both bulldogs with a prolific creative force that has produced their own Instagram account and Pinterest Board.

Alexis took up photography as hobby two years ago. She has taken some fabulous images of both bulldogs so we decided to use her photographs as wall art over her bed. We framed face portraits of each bulldog in black and suspended them by hot pink ribbons.

So when it came time to transition her bedroom from cutesy tween to fashionista teen, we decided to create a room that was Bulldog Chic to reflect her personality and passions.

We repurposed my daughter’s dresser by painting black accents and adding hot pink glass knobs giving it a more mod, fashionista vibe.

She chose hot pink and black as the color scheme of her room. We kept the walls a neutral golden beige and accented with those two colors. Black, hot pink and white shag pillows provide textured layers against a quilted velvet hot pink headboard. A hot pink bean bag sits next to my daughter’s nightstand as the perfect landing spot for both bulldogs, Bosco Junior and Hope.

We painted a bedroom mural honoring Bosco Senior, our pet that passed away 3 years ago, and added a touch of realism by hanging Bosco Senior’s old collar underneath a simple black silhouette of his face.

We repurposed her bedroom furniture by painting the all white end table and dresser with black drawer fronts and tops and added glass pink knobs and drawer pulls.

To seamlessly blend bulldog chic with fashionista sensibility, we added a touch of glam with metallic, glass and mirror accents including a bubble glass clock, silver mosaic table lamp and picture frames.

A black and white zebra striped chair and an area rug mix up prints and textures so that the room stays stylish without being too kitchsy.

The total cost of my 13-year-old’s Bulldog Chic Bedroom makeover was $1,200 including the bed that we purchased from American Signature Furniture Store.

The bedspread is from the Pink Collection by Victoria’s Secret. Most of the accessories pictured came from Target and Kirkland’s. The challenge with both my son’s bedroom and my daughter’s bedroom is that they are constant outgrowing their decor as their sense of style evolves. Every few years, I update their rooms as a birthday present to reflect their maturing tastes and changing hobbies and interests. I’m just waiting for the day when my son outgrows Legos—whatever will I do with his wall-to-wall collection?  Maybe I can sell him on a more masculine interpretation of the bulldog theme too.
